Asthma is a chronic condition characterized by the narrowing and inflammation of the airways with increased production of mucus. People with asthma will have difficulty breathing and shortness of breath.

However, not everyone experiences the same asthma symptoms. For some people, asthma is just a minor health inconvenience, while for others, an asthma episode can last for days and cause serious problems.

Our top professionals at Tots N Teens Pediatrics in Texas have the expertise to help you identify signs of asthma in your children at an early stage and create a treatment plan that works for them.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Asthma

Asthma symptoms may vary. Here are some of the most common signs of asthma:

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Frequent coughing, especially at night
  • Tightening of the chest or regular pains
  • Wheezing or rapid breathing after activities like exercising, running, etc.
  • Lack of sleep due to trouble breathing
  • Feeling extremely tired during strenuous activities
  • Symptoms of normal cold or flu

Sometimes, the mild symptoms of asthma mentioned above may lead to a severe asthma attack that lasts for days.

If your children are exhibiting any of the following signs, their asthma may be worsening:

  • Increased frequency of asthma signs and symptoms
  • Endless coughing fits
  • Severe chest pains
  • Regular rapid breathing and shortness of breath
  • Inability to talk
  • Feeling extreme anxiety
  • Cyanosis, where the color of mucus membranes changes to a darker shade (blue or greyish fingernails or lips)
  • Rapid movement of nostrils

For some people, asthma symptoms worsen in certain situations.

In exercise-induced asthma, the situation only worsens when it is dry and cold out. As for allergy-induced asthma, attacks are triggered by pollen in the air, dried saliva, or pet hairs. In the case of occupational asthma, certain fumes and gases present in the workplace are the causes.

Early Signs of Asthma in Children

A child can start exhibiting signs of asthma at any age, but most children have their first symptoms before the age of five. Just as in adults, symptoms may vary. From frequent colds to extreme coughing, asthma can manifest itself in any form in children.

With asthma, it’s important to spot the symptoms and start treatment early. So, if your children are suffering from any of the symptoms mentioned above, schedule a consultation with our pediatric experts at Tots N Teens Pediatrics at any of our locations in Plano, Mesquite, or Forney, Texas.
